At the International Snow Sculpture Championships in Colorado on January 27, people will carve the white stuff into art. Planning begins months before the first snow falls. Teams submit applications and sketches of their sculptures in July. Then, a panel of judges chooses 14 teams for the championship.
The rules are simple: Electric tools are not allowed. Teams carve snow with everything but the results are not entirely in the sculptors' hands. "If it is extremely sunny and warm", DeWall, the competition's director of public relations, explained, "we will erect old sail from sail boats into the air to block the sun from melting the sculptures". If it snows, she continued, teams have to work extra hard to scrape(刮掉) the new snow off their work.
The judges look for creativity, technical skill, and overall impact on the viewer. The winner does not receive any money. "There is no cash prize because the event began with the concept of global camaraderie(情谊)", DeWall explained. Instead of focusing on money, she continued, "winners revel(纵情) in the friendship, the art, and the hard work".
What does the phrase "white stuff" in the first paragraph refer to?
A.Wood.
B.Snow.
C.Ice.
D.Rock.

A survey has showed that the daughters of the generation of feminists want nothing more than a happy marriage and family in the countryside. The average 29-year-old women now long for a return to the lifestyle. of a 1950s housewife. The modern women are more realistic. Research into the attitudes of 1500 women with an average age of 29 found that 61 percent believe it is “unhelpful” and “annoying” for the women to deal with jobs, motherhood and social lives at the same time. 第三节 短文理解2
阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。
"I would almost rather see you dead. "Robert S. Cassatt, a leading banker of Philadelphia, shouted when his twenty-year-old eldest daughter announced that she wanted to become an artist.
In the 19th century, playing at drawing or painting on dishes was all right for a young lady, but serious work in art was not. And when the young lady's family ranked among the best of Philadelphia's social families, such an idea could not even be considered.
That was how Mary Cassatt, born in 1844, began her straggle as an artist. She did not tremble before her father's anger. Instead, she opposed him with courage and at last made him change his mind. Mary Cassatt gave up her social position and all thought of a husband and a family, which in those times was unthinkable for a young la- dy. In the end, after long years of hard work and perseverance, she became America's most important woman artist and the internationally recognized leading woman painter of the time.
How did Mr. Cassatt react when his daughter made her announcement?
A.He feared for her life.
B.He was very angry.
C.He nearly killed her.

Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in materials original ways. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.
We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.
Some people hate everything that is modern because ______.
A.they are aged
B.they find it hard to accept modern things
C.they take their standards of perfection from the Greek
D.they look at things by the standards of the past
