英译中
What will the role of universities be in this globalized economy? How will they contribute to improving society through innovation that will improve the quality of life and support economic growth? How will they prepare their graduates who will extract the best and explore the greatest in this increasingly complex society?// It is important to remember that undergraduate education and post-graduate education are tightly linked to research. Our education programs should ensure that the students are learning in an atmosphere characterized by the pursuit of new knowledge and process of discovery. An interrelated educational program will create a flow of young, bright and uninhibitedminds to work on the frontier of discovery.// The fundamental mission of a university is the creation of new knowledge which sometimes has immediate practical applications. But that can never be the only goal. And making it a primary goal will frequently be short-sighted. Basic contributions to knowledge should be valued for being exactly that. Our university has an almost unique role in fostering such contribution.// Choosing the right people is the first and perhaps the most crucial step in ensuring an innovative environment. There are three types of people that can be important. The first class of individuals consists of fanciful visionaries. The second class of important people in innovative environment consists of revolutionary explorers. The third class of individuals consists of uninhibited executors.

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the attention to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise(产生) between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour. It would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
(1) “The same meaning is attached to telephone calls after 11:00 p.m.” Here “attached” means_______.
A.taken B.drawn C.given D.shown
(2) According to this passage, time plays an important role in _____.
A.everyday life B.social life
C.public life D.private life
(3) According to the passage, the author may agree to which of the following statements?
A.It is appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before a dinner party date in U.S.A.
B.It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some countries.
C.It is best for one to make telephone calls at eight because it costs much less.
D.If one is less than 5 minutes late, he has to make a short apology.
(4) The best title for this passage is_______.
A.The Voice of Time
B.The Importance of Time
C.The Importance of an Announcement
D.Time and Tide Wait for No Man
(5) What is the purpose of the author to write this passage?
A.To tell us not to call someone very early.
B.To tell us the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.
C.To tell us that we should treat time differently in cross-cultural communication.
D.To teach us how to apology when we are late.

Beware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! ”
This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let’s say that during Governo Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs! That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state ha net gain of two milli on jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that the y only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies and lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
1、Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A、Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying
B、You can’t trust gamblers
C、All governors help their states
D、The truth can be used in dishonest ways
2、What does “deceive ” in paragraph 1 mean?
A、educate
B、ignore warnings
C、fool
D、repair
3、What does “omitted ” in paragraph 4 mean?
A、spent money
B、left out
C、told about
D、exposed
4、The author clearly wants people to ().
A、think carefully about what they read and hear
B、never believe what is said in advertisements
C、never trust anyone
D、vote for female candidates
5、The appropriate title for this selection would be ().
A、Election Campaigns
B、Everyone Lies
