Everyone knows what a needle is. Of course there are needles for sewing machines, needles for injection, you nameit. But few people think of the wonder a needle works in the hands of those who practice acupuncture.

During the past ten years of so, I have been suffering from a terrible headache. It seems to be getting from bad to worsethese days. Last night I got a sudden pain in my head. It was so terrible that I could hardly bear it. Although I swallowed all kinds of pain-killers, I didn't feel any better. It seemed that there was nothing I could do but phone for a doctor.

One of our neighbors happened to be with us. He was not a doctor, but he timidly offered his help, saying "Do you mind if I tried acupuncture on you? These needles may possibly do you some good."I agreed. In a moment, he had taken out a few needles from his purse. Without a moment's delay, he fixed a few needles into the skin on my head here and there. Before long, I felt thoroughly relieved.

Just then, the doctor sped through my house and said,"Where is our patient?"

"Sorry, Doctor, You are too late. It's killed!" I answered in delight.

It's a miracle, isn't it?

Task 1
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.
Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship- owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire, not every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool(集体储备金), there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who administer the pool of contributions are insurers.
The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form. of contract on stout paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the premium which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens.
The premium for an insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their branch of insurance and they may lose business. On the other hand if they make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.
According to the passage, insurance is possible because ______.
A.only a small proportion of the insured suffer loss
B.only insured people suffer loss
C.nearly everyone suffers loss
D.everyone suffers loss

Everyone knows that the favourite food of the Americans is the hamburgers.
The best place to buy hamburgers is a fast-food restaurant(饭馆). In these restaurants, people ask for their food, wait just a few minutes. Then when the food is ready, they take it to their tables themselves.They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out in a plastic(塑 料 的) box and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. 阅读理解:阅读下面的短文,根据文章内容进行判断,正确写“T”错误写“F”。
Meetings are very common nowadays. They can be weekly, monthly or annually. Some people think most meetings feel like a waste of time. They seem pointless and boring at times.
Then how do you run an effective meeting?
First, assign roles, such as greeter, timekeeper and note taker, so that you, the organizer, can be free to lead discussions and presentations.
Next, take charge from the start. Everyone will listen to you and join your discussion if you take charge in every aspect of the meeting. Show everyone that you really know what you are talking about, and everything that you talk about is useful.
Most important of all, follow the agenda. At the end of the meeting, spend a little extra time for the participants to discuss anything that needs to be immediately discussed but which may not have been on the agenda.
Always ask the participants questions to speak their minds and keep them interested. Remember that a good meeting is a two-way communication. Be open to everyone's opinion, ideas, and suggestions. Don't forget to thank them for the ideas they present.
And finally, close the meeting with everyone knowing what is expected of them and what they should do for the following weeks.Then, send out meeting minutes within a few days, while everyone still remembers the points.
1. A successful meeting should have different people to play different roles. {T、F}
2. Generally people only discuss the items listed on the agenda in a successful meeting.{T、F}
3. An unsuccessful meeting might be full of single-way communication. {T、F}
4. When the meeting is closed, it means there is nothing to do in the following weeks. {T、F}

第10题

When you go to university to study for a degree, you have decided to study professionally, rather than as an amateur; so being a student is now your profession for at least the next four years.

This involves a change of attitude in many ways. Although the process has been going on since you went to middle school, the biggest change is going to take place. Now, instead of taking several subjects, you have chosen one major subject because you find it interesting and worth exploring further. The choice was yours. You also have the goal of getting a degree . The degree and the stages you have to pass through to achieve it give you motivation, even though it may become weak from time to time, and not all parts of the course will be exciting; a sure way to lose interest is to do too little work. It is a law of diminishing returns - the less work you do, the less interest you will have and the more bored you will become. So, regular work is needed to keep up your interest as well as to keep pace with new work.

Another change is in the relationship with teachers. This may well have changed during middle school and high school, but now the whole context is different. You are no longer forced to slay in school all day, and apart from your class time, you organize your own time and place for studying. You are there to study (an active process) rather than to be taught (passive). Your teachers may or may not urge you, but they do want you to share their interest in the subject and they want you to succeed.

Some activities, like discussing and reading, are basic to studying. Make sure that you are doing these efficiently.

Group discussions give you a chance to train yourself to speak and discuss more effectively.

They will fail in their purpose if you keep silent and if you start off this way, the harder it will become to get out of the situation of being the non-speaking member of the group. In the future you are almost certainly going to have to be good at speaking, so get into the way of talking about your subject now. This is actually more fun than sitting being silently miserable because you are not saving anything. Nobody will think what you say is foolish. Everyone will be thankful not to face awkward silence.

55. When does a person start to study professionally?

AThe time when he starts a profession.
